Mamedyarov plays Banter Blitz on chess24: “Expect great honor and love!”

Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, Nihal Sarin and Jan Gustafsson. Today some lucky Premium members will have the chance to play these three top grandmasters in some Banter Blitz action here on chess24!

Our Premium members have several events to be excited about today:

One “new” face is Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, who has signed a deal with chess24 and will hold regular Banter Blitz events. While the Azerbajan grandmaster will speak in his native language, the events are open to all Premium members.

Mamedyarov does have experience in the format, scoring 14 wins and one loss on time in an event after the Steinitz Memorial in May.

The 35-year-old is excited about playing on chess24 again:

I really like to play Banter Blitz and I do it with love. My fans can expect that I will be playing with great honor and love.

Mamedyarov is among the top players who got a taste of over-the-board chess since the pandemic, as he took part in the Bundesliga tournament in Germany in September.

As a professional player it doesn’t really feel good to play online, but to play with such fans and strong players it means a lot to me. I hope that as soon as possible we are going to play over the board soon.

While the world no. 7 is looking forward to return to the chessboard again, he is excited about the prospect of taking part in the $1.5 million Champions Chess Tour, the sequel to the Magnus Carlsen Chess Tour, which begins November 22 on chess24.

I would be glad and it would be a great honor for me to take part in the Magnus tournaments. It is very interesting for me. It was and is always very interesting for me to play the World Champion and in all his tournaments.

Whether Mamedyarov will be among the invitees has not yet been announced. Last weekend Peter Svidler won his golden ticket in an exciting Chessable Qualifier event. Liem Quang Le had previously qualified through the Banter Blitz Series.

If you miss out on facing Mamedyarov, don’t worry, you have more shots! 16-year-old Indian prodigy Nihal Sarin will also be doing a Banter Blitz, beginning at the same time: 19:00 CEST.

At 20:30 CEST, our own Jan Gustafsson will be doing his 231st Banter Blitz.
