Magnus Carlsen only has the second most popular video series of 2020

A key advantage of being a Premium member on chess24 is access to video series by some of the world’s top players and trainers. Currently there are more than 100 series available in English by authors such as Magnus Carlsen, Peter Svidler, Viswanathan Anand, Jan Gustafsson, Laurent Fressinet and an increasing number in other languages as well. The World Champion is the author of two of the most popular series of 2020, but could not compete with the most popular authors. Here are the top 5 of the year.

5. Viswanathan Anand: Opening tips from a World Champion

5-time World Champion Viswanathan Anand’s video series was one of the first to appear on chess24 in 2014, but remains one of the most popular series in 2020. The Indian legend introduces you to the most common chess openings, such as the Ruy Lopez, Sicilian Defence, French Defence and the King’s Gambit. The series is excellent for beginners who want to get a quick summary of basic ideas, and it’s also available in full to everyone who completes free registration on chess24. Anand’s other series for beginners Learn to play chess with a World Champion is also immensely popular on chess24.

4. Jon Ludvig Hammer: Play 1.e4: A Complete White Repertoire

Norway’s number 4 has prepared openings for Magnus Carlsen in his World Championship matches, and knows a thing or two about the first stage in the game. In this series, which was published in late 2019, Hammer provides a complete repertoire for playing 1.e4 with the white pieces with the focus on solid lines with quick development, early castling and good central control. Hammer also released a series on openings for Black which is also among the most popular on chess24.

3. Magnus Carlsen: Attacking without Sacrificing

This is one of Magnus Carlsen’s two video series on chess24 that was published in early 2020. It’s not a big surprise that it’s popular among fans. The World Champion teaches you how to attack by looking at four of his own best games.

2. Magnus Carlsen: The Stonewall

Carlsen’s video series on the Stonewall was the second most popular video series on chess24 in 2020. As in his Attacking without Sacrificing video series, he uses his own games to show ideas that he pioneered or applied to beat Vishy Anand and Fabiano Caruana with the black pieces.

1. Hall of Fame: The 50 Greatest Chess Players of All Time

When Jan Gustafsson and Peter Heine Nielsen took on the almost impossible project of compiling their own list of the 50 best chess players of all time, it caused massive debate among chess fans. Now the video series on a never-ending topic among chess fans has shattered all records on chess24 in terms of views.

Recently chess24 released three new video series, among them GM Romain Edouard’s 1.d4: The Benoni Defence. FM Kamil Plichta also released a series on how to tackle a tricky opening: Crush the Dutch with 2.Bg5 and IM Sebastian Mihajlov published Destroy the French, which has already received praise among chess24 users.
